Detective_Cobalt

One of the Alts_of_a_Spectrum

As much as most try to ignore it, there are, indeed, things that go bump in the night. All sorts of strange, fantastic creatures, hiding on the outskirts of society, just trying to fit in and remain unseen. Why?

Centuries ago, things were certainly a lot easier. Less dense populations, far weaker weapons... all sorts of oddities could do as they pleased, without much risk of death. However, as the years trickled on, and humans became more widespread, stronger, smarter... all sorts of being went into hiding, trying to avoid detection. After all, a witch could blast away hunters in the past, but could now be easily felled by a bullet. A vampire could feed and hide with ease before, but with modern forensics, would be quickly found out if she wasn't cautious. Of course, while they're certainly not able to act as freely as before, they do benefit from the fact that very few really believe they exist anymore - able to act a bit more openly in recent years, with attracting much suspicion - after all, the police would hardly believe that a ghost stole your jewelery! And this is where Cobalt comes in.

Investigators of the supernatural aren't as ridiculous a career choice as one might think - after all, while most would dismiss them as frauds or crazy people, the ones who actually need their services would rush to them - when the police just tell you there's no such thing as monsters, you'd naturally go to someone who would believe you, and be able to help you. Cobalt fits this well - he studies and looks for the supernatural in all shapes and forms, keeping notes, mapping hotspots of activity... he's one of the few people who can call themselves an expert in the paranormal, and not be a scam artist!

Typically, the risks of the job can vary - some creatures are just hungry, lonely, or annoyed by something, which is usually not too difficult to rectify - letting the monster be on its way, leaving the person bothered by it alone. Of course, not everything is willing to just live in the shadows - and, indeed, some monsters try to attack, violate, devour, or kill humans. This is usually a much more difficult thing to deal with, and typically involves trying to trap the monster, before calling the authorities. The authorities, in this case, are usually quite strong, respected creatures - ones that don't want humans to find out about their species, and will usually deal with captured monsters in their own way. Typically, trying to kill monsters, even the more violent ones, will usually upset quite a few of them - so, leaving monster criminals to monster societies is usually the best. Of course, that usually means Cobalt is the one to do all the legwork in trapping them.

Of course, given the limited client pool, being an investigator of monsters isn't exactly a wealth-attracting job. Cobalt lives in an apartment by himself, the place fairly cluttered - various research documents, notes, older books, and various supplies and tools all scattered about - the investigator not the cleanest of people, partly out of apathy, and partly out of convenience - a few beings had tried to pick him off when he was relaxing at home, and having a variety of useful tools scattered about usually meant he could just reach over and whack them one! He eats well enough, though his lifestyle has intruded on this - the water main is blessed, he eats a lot of salty foods, garlic is a staple in his diet... though, as a result of all of this constantly in his system, he's practically immune to things like vampirism, lycanthropy, and other such infections.

He does have a few monster friends - after all, an investigator serves as a bridge between monsters and humans - someone who doesn't just protect people, but also helps keep the supernatural secret and safe. As such, it's not uncommon for him to visit monsters to talk and study, the man having a fairly large notebook full of his work, various interviews, notes of different monsters, reports on specific individuals... quite the treasure trove of research and study!

If there's something strange in the neighbourhood, who you gonna call? The local authorities!
