Darcy

Darcy looks like a fairly typical dog-demi at first glance, but looks can be deceiving. In actuality, she’s a barghest; what many would call a ‘hell-hound’, She isn’t actually demonic in nature, though, oddly enough!

As such, she’s got a variety of interesting tricks up her nonexistent sleeves. Physically, she’s much stronger than she looks, and very fast. She also, of course, is rather...elastic, but that’s not unusual ‘round these parts.

Darcy also has magical abilities, centered around the manipulation of shadows. She can extend and alter the shape of her shadow, and, by allowing it to interact with a potential ‘victim’s’ shadow, she can affect the ‘victim’s’ body, usually restraining them with invisible tendrils.

She’s also able to track someone, by ‘tagging’ their soul; a flash of her red eyes, and she can find you wherever you might go. The ‘tag’ lasts for a few days to a week, which is where the story of barghests being an omen of death came from; some would toy with their victims for as long as possible before going in for the kill.

She's also able to transform herself into a 'real' barghest, a huge, shaggy, pitch-black dog, nearly seven feet tall at the shoulder , with red eyes that blaze like fire. She cannot talk in this form, of course, but she's just as intelligent, and much faster and more physically powerful. She can’t use as much of her shadow manipulation, however, but she hardly needs it.

Finally, in both forms, she’s able to travel in shadows, emerging from pretty much any spot of darkness…and she can pull prey into them as well.

Inside the shadowy realm, it’s a dark world; a vast, quiet, ancient-feeling moor, dotted with small hills and standing-stones, all cloaked in mist. It's a perpetual midnight, lit only by a constant, unnaturally large full moon. It’s not just Darcy’s home, either; other creatures of shadow can be seen, and visitors from other realms pop up as well. You never know just what you’ll run into.

This all may sound quite evil, but here’s the twist; Darcy isn’t actually particularly evil, nor are most of her shadowy kin; the barghests and other ‘black dogs’ of lore that people saw as omens were exceptions, not the rule.

Darcy, however, is more of a prankster, and enjoys giving mortals a good scare now and then, but she also has a definite soft spot. She’s led lost mortals to safety, protected those in danger (particularly in remote areas), and comforted those in need. Of course, she’s also helped friends throw pretty awesome Halloween parties, and scared a few naughty children into line at the behest of their parents; she knows she’s spooky, and revels in it!
