"What do you mean? I'm-- I'm like you! Just like you! C'mon, don't say things like that, it's not funny."

Curly wouldn't hesitate to tell you that she's just a normal girl. Well, aside from being a Pokémon, of course, but mysterious creatures are everywhere; it isn't as though beings like her are particularly uncommon! She's cheerful and bubbly and sweet by nature, and all she really wants is to live a happy life.

Unfortunately, Curly isn't entirely real.

Tangela evolves into Tangrowth-- that's just common knowledge. But Curly is very insistent about the fact that she used to be a Tangela when she was younger, and a 'Tangel' before that. She says she's a 'Gelanla', not a Tangrowth. And as far as appearances go, she definitely doesn't look like the shaggy, hulking mess of vines that defines Tangrowth's appearance.

What is Curly, then? She's something that never came to be. In this reality, her species is an anomaly. She is one of a kind, to the point that no Pokédex will affirm her identity; in fact, even the most advanced editions fail to recognize her as a Pokémon at all. The response is always the same:

ERROR. DATA NOT FOUND.

Despite all this, despite how she's not supposed to be here in this world, Curly is still very much alive, a creature of flesh and blood. In that sense, she does technically "exist"-- but she is woefully hard-pressed to find anyone who will believe her. "You're not a Pokémon," they say, and the fact that Pokéballs have no effect on her proves them right beyond any shadow of a doubt.

How did she end up in a place like this? Why is this happening? Why won't anyone believe her? Why can't she have a Trainer? She asks herself those questions constantly amidst fits of despair and frustration. Curly just wants to be the normal girl she always says she is, but it is simply not her fate to belong. The gleeful smile she wears is only genuine half the time, when she's allowed to lose herself in day to day life and forget about the fact that she's apparently some kind of misplaced abomination. The other half of the time, it hides the dread and panic of a lost soul that's desperate for any kind of validation, for someone to take her at her word, just once.

It isn't always something she can cope with, unfortunately. Other Pokémon frustrate her. They make her jealous. They have it so easy, and she doesn't understand what makes her different from them. Pent-up denial and anger can wipe the smile off her face all too easily, causing her to lash out in ways that aren't particularly... healthy. Especially not for the people she ends up assaulting.
