"Yes, I do run this shrine. And I assure you, the blade is not merely ceremonial, so do not test my patience."

Churem is a shrine maiden who is absolutely dedicated to the cause of purity. Despite her oni heritage, Churem willingly became part of the clan of shrine maidens, seeing her oni clan's ways of drinking and merry-making as degrading. The tenets of purity and worship fit her much more well, so much so that she has become one of the higher caste shrine maidens despite her oni heritage, taking care of her own shrine. Due to her deep involvement, she won't let anyone slight her or her beliefs, and she will put any person in their place with her oni strength, able to wrestle others to the ground or engage in traditional martial arts.

When she hears of onis in the area, Churem hides her face to protect the family that she ran away from. Despite her hatred of their way of life, she still wishes to protect them, and potentially show them the way of her own faith, if she got the chance. Fellow onis don't take well to betrayal, so the news of a relative oni taking part in purification or exorcist rituals would cause her family to become outcasts of their clan. Thankfully, she has moved quite far from her original family, and thus doesn't have to worry as much about being recognized.

Especially abnormally for Churem is her long horns, which indicate a high status within oni communities. Because of this, many are shocked that she would choose to forego a comfortable life among the onis and instead engage in shrine maiden activities, where oni are virtually nonexistent.

Her original name was not Churem, though she never reveals it to others- she claims it means "rebirth" in her native tongue, and symbolically took on the word as her name after her official recognition as a shrine maiden.

Churem's one flaw as a shrine maiden is her notorious lack of empathy, given her tumultuous relationship with her native civilization. She has little patience and frequently assumes people will never change unless she beats it into them. Because of this, she was assigned a shrine in a place that is more traditionally faithful, though that is not to say there aren't sinners in that area, either.
