Kumiho in literature
Originating in ancient Chinese myths dating back centuries, the Korean kumiho shares many similarities to the Chinese huli jing and the Japanese kitsune. All explain fox spirits as being the result of great longevity or the accumulation of energy, with kumiho said to be foxes who have lived for a thousand years, and give them the power of shape-shifting, usually appearing in the guise of a woman. However, while huli jing and kitsune are often depicted with ambiguous moral compasses, possibly good or bad, the kumiho is almost always treated as a malignant figure who feasts on human flesh.
It is unclear at which point in time Koreans began viewing the kumiho as a purely evil creature, since many ancient texts mention benevolent kumiho assisting humans (and even make mentions of wicked humans tricking kind but naïve kumiho).
In later literature, kumiho were often depicted as bloodthirsty half-fox, half-human creatures that wandered cemeteries at night, digging human hearts out from graves. The fairy tale The Fox Sister depicts a fox spirit preying on a family for livers.
The Nobleman's Daughter
Born as the daughter of the most noble kumiho house, Chae, She is slated to become the leader of the huge household and city of Rajin-Sŏnbong. one of the most important port cities in Korea. Kumiho have lived within the city without issue for years, even if most of Korea sees them as horrible man-eaters, the Chinese see them as the trickster spirits and benevolent ones at that, as many use the port as means to go to Nippon or other islands around the north. Nevertheless, the town itself is somewhat of a tourist destination now, hosting many a casino and...well..brothel that caters to those whom love their girls and guys a little bit foxy.
Not that Kyung-mi knows any of this fact. She actually has never been let past the walls of the household, both out of fear of their darling, naive daughter getting raped by one of the unsavory humans...and the worry that they would lose the elegant and quiet beauty she has grown up to become. Her parents also want to ensure that her husband, whoever it may be, is someone of respect and report, as they intend on letting whomever they arrange to marry their daughter to take over as the administrators of the city itself.
Chae Kyung-mi
As described above, Mi isn't exactly a very worldly girl. She has spent most of her life in the seaside home of her parents, between four walls. The home and surrounding forest are gated, and though they are vast, she has explored every inch of them, and often hides herself from her family, though they always seem to find her. A gentle, and quiet girl, she tends to simply watch people as they go about the mansion, or do their work for her parents. Often times, when spoke to, she gets a little blush on her face and she finds somewhere to hide.
It's not as though she is shy, mind you. Her parents forbid her to talk to any of the servants, and she is nothing if not respectful to her parents wishes, even if she has broken that rule on occasion.
Still, she often climbs onto the wall or goes out onto the docks to watch the outside world. Often times she is watching the boats go by or the city glinting in the distance with a longing look on her face, wanting nothing more then to go see it all, whether her experience be bad or good.
