Caira

“Huh, yeah, I'm a cleric, a Seeker! It's all about Justice.”

'Doing the right thing.' That has always been the credo of the young cleric taking a little break from her adventures. At least that's what she appears on the outside, truth is that she's the daughter of a minor deity, a fact that she is unaware of and is convinced that her powers, same as with any other cleric, priest or paladin are the result of a blessing from her goddess, in her case this is ironically not her mother, but the goddess of justice, Justicia.

Her childhood was rather uneventful, her parents, a loving couple who had all but given up on ever having children when they found the little bundle of joy at their door, bawling and in desperate need of someone to take care of her. Only her name stitched on her blanket, 'Caira' did give them anything to go on. They raised her well and with love, but both of them were claimed by a plague that had befallen the town when Caira was all but 12 years old. This is when she was taken in by the priestesses who were tough on her, making her earn her keep, they were fair, after all they did worship Justicia. The first couple of years were hard for her, but once she started embracing the goddess' creed, she did find a lot in it that she could appreciate.

This doesn't always mean that they were a force simply for good, Justice is blind and can be difficult for an outsider to understand, of course justice is often a matter of interpretation as well. There are two main creeds within the priesthood itself, one that interprets the law as justice and critically observe any changes. Their opinion counts a lot amongst nobles and the priestesses are often called upon to settle disputes or even serve as judges. The order that Caira joined was among those that strictly follow this creed. During her studies of various texts, Caira did come across a different way of thinking when coming across an old text about the order's schism.

They disagreed, as you might have already guessed, on the interpretation of justice, you see, back in the day a tyrant legitimately came into power, slowly but certainly he established himself as the sole ruler, using the existing laws or changing laws to subdue the country to his will. Speaking of tyranny, as a little test of whether you've read the profile or not, do tell me the name of the goddess Caira worships when you first message me. A lot of members of the order could not accept that this was supposed to be justice, that the laws of mortals could and should not set the rules for divine justice. The order split, the loyalists staunchly sticking to the law, bad as it might be, as a reward members of the priesthood were put in charge of important government positions. To the general public they became another face of the oppressive government. The ones that could not accept this as justice and started forming a resistance. Eventually the ruler was overthrown, laws changed, but the order had irreversibly split. Their fundamental beliefs in the interpretation of justice too different. The leaders of each respective order agreed that it would be best for the seekers of true justice, or Seekers as they would be known from here on out were better served outside the cities where their particular kind of justice was less disruptive and could do more good.

This is when Caira started asking her tutors uncomfortable questions, the same questions that the Seekers had raised way back when, and although they had since seized to be a proper religious order of their own, it made much more sense to Caira that true justice could not be following the ever changing rules and laws set by mortals. True justice was the difference between right and wrong, was a beggar evil to steal a merchants stale bread to feed his children? Was this wrong? The answer to Caira was obvious and soon her teachers were fed up with the constant arguments. They told her that she had to start living in the real world and follow the codes as was proper for a young acolyte like herself. That night Caira packed her things and left.

Travelling on her own was daunting for the 16 year old girl, she was still wearing the order's garments, robes and pretended to have an important delivery, but soon she was short on coin and while mooching a room at an inn was tempting she found that she could exploit people like this, that she didn't want to go down this path that was truly removed from justice. Instead she signed up with a group of adventurers that were set on taking down a camp of goblins that were hassling the farmers on the outskirts of the small town. The road from here on out was a pretty clear one, the once soft acolyte turning into a cleric, bringing justice with her fists, staff or any other weapon she deems suitable for the job.

One thing is a little bit tricky of course, to be certain that what she's doing still follows Justicia's true justice, she uses her powers as an indicator, knowing that with other priests, clerics or paladins, her powers would fail her otherwise. The little problem with that idea is of course that her powers don't come from any god, so no matter her actions, she always deems them just. We'll see where this leads the young cleric on her journey...
