▸ Deep Ocean, Vast Sea ◂
The ocean can be a terrible prison.
For those like Bight born with a profound and innate curiosity, the sea might seem like a great playground for even the most insatiable explorer. From abundant wildlife to maze-like kelp forests to mysterious shipwrecks, there's no shortage of curiosities to discover. Such is a fact that Bight is aware of and has acknowledged time and time again--what's more, he's even thoroughly adapted to go spelunking beneath the tides, and with the freedom to do so (mostly) untethered by gravity.
And yet the endlessness of the ocean quickly became
boring
, its beautiful blue, monotonous
. Bight hasn't lived long enough to explore the world's
oceans in their entirety, nor is he equipped to venture into colder waters, but still he often feels as though he's seen as much as he ever will.
The ocean's vastness, which had once been its most charming quality, soon became its greatest flaw
; Bight could venture
across numerous seas for hours on end, never to be graced with a sight other than the same, murky brine he'd known all his life.
His fondest memories always came from land. The shrill cries of gulls, the mechanical roar of a passing ship's engine, the distant view of a lively shore; All of these things and more came from the drier parts of the earth, and so Bight found himself deeply
attracted
to
coastlines and the surface. What were all these creatures milling about on land, draped in such odd fashions? Land-dwellers, so
vastly different from his own kind, appealed to him in such a way that the sea never could. They were intelligent: conversing amongst
one another with such a familiarity that was positively alien compared to the distant, flightier social habits of ocean life. These creatures were
industrious, too, responsible for the awe-inspiring
vessels which infrequently tore across the waves of his watery home. Indeed, Bight had never seen anything like them,
nor would he ever find another species more enthralling
.
In an ever constant quest to learn more about the world Bight has, against the advancements of his own evolution, taken to sandy shores and shallow waters. He yearns to know more about the realm that must lie beyond the beach, and not even the pesky matter of his own marine biology will stop him.
▸ Personality ◂
Chipper, friendly, and always eager to meet new people, Bight is a far cry from many of his ilk. Though he's been met with the odd
shriek of horror and accusations of cold-hearted intent, these have been infrequent occurances and ones he's helpless to understand.
Truth be told, he's never wanted to hurt anyone. Normally patrolling the shore in search
of treasures and friends, he's a naive and kind-hearted soul who simply wants to enjoy life.
Bight's fervent curiosity is likely the first thing anyone will learn about him. An insatiable thirst for knowledge means that Bight is one to ask questions, and lots of them. Ranging anywhere from the complex to the utterly mundane, Bight is prone to be just as fascinated by how the universe came to be as he is to know how a garbage disposal works. Truly no topic is off-limits to the sea snake, though this desperate need to understand the world around him often lands him in bizarre situations.
Easy to enthrall and easier to please, Bight isn't picky about who he shares his company with. He tries to see the good in everyone and every situation, which is a downfall as much as it is a boon. Bight is unfortunately effortless to trick and manipulate, able to be coaxed into doing truly horrific things for the sake of someone he considers a friend. Ultimately what Bight craves is acceptance, and he'll do just about anything to earn it.
▸ Aquatic Evolution ◂
Despite his vested interest in land-dwellers and the lives they lead, Bight is, like others of his species, perfectly useless out of his
element. His body is compressed and quite flat compared to other snakes; While this adaptation is useful for swimming, on land he has a terrible time keeping himself from
rolling onto his side. Unlike his terrestrial cousins his kind also lack the plated belly scales required for non-aquatic movement.
Consequently, Bight has an embarrassing tendency to beach himself in enthusiastic escapades to find out
more about the world. During these times, he's usually dependent on the tide to take him back out to sea.
▸ Venom ◂
Bight does have one defense should he find himself in an unfavorable situation; He is extremely venomous. While ordinarily meek
to a fault, his venom serves as an effective deterrent to even the most persistent predators. True to his passive nature, Bight will
threaten the use of his venom more readily than he will actually use it. If he has any doubts with regards to its necessity, he's more
likely to offer non-venomous bites in an effort to scare off his captors without actually bringing them lasting harm.
His venom is exceptionally potent otherwise. While it's mostly used to subdue his favorite types of fish, it is strong enough to render even massive creatures unconscious with a possibility to prove fatal if he could ever bring himself to deliver an adequate amount. Generally he's too subservient to try and envenom his predators, and he's more likely to accept death with the philosophy that they don't deserve to die just for wanting a bite to eat.
▸ As a side note, I love the idea of his venom causing unexpected and unusual reactions in his predators. Rather than being of
any real danger it can instead cause bizarre symptoms: sexual euphoria, increased sex drive, increased appetite, etc. Not required. ◂
