"The Little Sisters are getting older... which is troubling. As they reach adolescence, they become aggressive, feral. Worse, the ADAM they ingest contains traces of lethal Plasmids left over from the war. The splicers are becoming far more effective predators as well. Our Big Daddies are falling left and right. Perhaps... perhaps the elder Sisters could be trained to sniff out the lost ADAM, and reclaim it for us. Yes... from what I've seen, they certainly wouldn't have to wait for the culprit to die..."

"We put our eldest Sister through a new regimen of physical and mental conditioning, and suited her up with modified Protector equipment of my design. The younger ones have dubbed her a "Big Sister." Sadly, this is a stopgap. Between rogue splicers and the aging of the girls, we'll run out of viable Little Sisters soon. After that... the surface may be our only source..."

As with many of her siblings, Bethany started off her involuntary career at one of the many orphanages in Rapture. She was one of the early Little Sisters, bonded to a Big Daddy to patrol the underwater city looking for the dead, to harvest them for precious ADAM. By the time the civil war between Fontaine and Ryan broke out, she had been at it for almost 4 years. The conflict largely passed her by, although her protector was killed by a splicer ambush, and she was forced to wander alone for a few days. Eventually she received another Big Daddy to help her with her tasks, and it was back to the grind, gathering blood from the deceased to be processed into more of the genetic-altering substance.

The end of childhood brought about the end of Bethany's usefulness as a Little Sister. No longer could she be relied upon to follow her conditioning faithfully, stubbornness and anxiety grew more prominent the older she got. Finally she refused to obey, threw down her needle and stopped following her programmed orders. Rather than be put down, Bethany was chosen for a new procedure, to turn her into something else entirely. The product of the intensive physical and mental alterations proved far more effective at her task. She had become... a Big Sister.
