tl;dr (ish): a soft-hearted mother who was once human, but tragically lost her life and was 'reborn' as a ghost Pokémon. though she was blessed with a second chance of sorts through her continued existence, she can hardly be called 'recognizable' when compared to her former self, even by the family she left behind-- a circumstance that has forced her to attempt to move on and start over from scratch.

attempt being the key word here.

you see, despite her most valiant efforts, Berkano is hopelessly incapable of getting over her loss. dying criminally young and being pried away from her husband and two small children has not done wonders for her psyche, to say the least; more than anything in the world, she wishes for things to go back to the way they were, and that desire has completely consumed her. if she couldn't return to her children, she eventually resolved, then she would simply have to start a new family to help her return to a sense of normalcy... yet fate was not kind to her in that endeavor. her new body proved to be infertile, the cruelest curse she could possibly imagine.

what could she do? why did her reality have to be so cold and empty? in time, as she succumbed to despair and lost herself in what was surely an impossible dream, Berkano's broken mind devised a means of regaining the precious things that had been torn from her. if she connected with other, weaker spirits, seized them, molded them like putty in her hands... she could eventually twist them enough that they'd start to look just like members of her own species. a shallow imitation, only skin deep, but that was all she needed; in her eyes, these warped spirits could serve as the children she so desperately longed for.

the one benefit her new form does possess is remarkable power-- a trait that enables her to hold sway over those she alters, bending their minds to her will, bit by bit. though they all inevitably resist at first, a strange compulsion keeps them chained to her side, such that it is only a matter of time until they come to terms with the future she's laid out for them. as their memories erode through the gravity of her presence, the souls she steals away will begin to believe the same fabricated reality their captor has convinced herself of.

your friends? your loved ones? your former life? no, no. that's all in your head, silly! Berkano is your mother, of course she is, she's always been your mother. and she'll take good care of you, even if she's the reason you're a ghost in the first place.


[ Berkano's motivations and methods are quite unorthodox, so feel free to ask for a better explanation if you want the details clarified. Not every scenario has to incorporate her horrible maternal brainwashing, either; it's optional, and won't be included unless you want it! ]
