April is a sweet girl, but was born with that most unfortunate schoolyard social malady - striking ginger hair and an abundance of freckles. It's not her fault - she's Irish - and she doesn't really see why it's such a big deal, but the unwritten rules of her school dictate that gingers must be shunned and ostracized.

It's not that she doesn't have any friends - she has two extremely close ones - but she does tend to bear the majority of the bullying that goes on in her class. She's a fairly slight girl, so it's not hard to push her around.

But on the other side of the coin, there are a couple of other students who seem to have a special interest in her. And not just in her own year, the older kids too. Some are bullies and some aren't, but April often notices people staring at her, and frequently during the lunch hour. And their eyes are slightly glazed, like they're fantasising about something.

It's probably nothing, though, right? And that time Sabine, the fat girl from the grade above, grabbed her and licked her face in the schoolyard, just before a teacher came along... that's probably nothing, too.
