Always energetic and friendly, Hina is also a bit airheaded and has difficulties remembering names.

Hina has tanned skin and brown hair that she wears in a ponytail. In the game, she wears athletic shorts and a red track suit jacket over a white shirt. In one of her official artworks, she wears a blue bathing suit with a white box logo on the front with some Japanese Characters that spell her last name and a single white stripe on the right side of her bust. Hina also has a rather curvaceous body that is usually a subject of harassment.

Aoi Asahina was one of the six students who managed to survive the awful events that transpired at Hope's Peak Academy, a government-funded school which was renowned for educating students that are top of their expertise.

However one fateful evening fifteen students including Asahina were trapped in the school under the control of a sadistic monochrome bear named Monokuma. They were forced to live a communal lifestyle together under a set amount of rules for the rest of their lives, although it is possible to "disrupt the peace" in order to escape.

In order to do this, a student must "graduate" from the school by murdering a classmate. After a body has been discovered, the rest of the students must work together to discover the culprit, who is known as the "blackened", while the innocents are on the side of the "whitened," playing off Monokuma's monochromatic color scheme.

If the culprit can fool the rest of their classmates, then they alone can graduate the school while the rest of the students will be punished (executed). However, if the classmates uncover the true culprit, then the culprit alone will be punished with a gruesome execution while everyone else remains unharmed.

Asahina along with
Kyoko Kirigiri
Toko Fukawa/Genocider Sho
Byakuya Togami
Yasuhiro Hagakure
and Makoto Naegi
were the six students who cracked the mystery of the Monokuma plot and escaped the high school. After spending some time mulling about Asahina set out on her own to start life somewhere fresh, eventually finding her way to nexus park.
