Among the first thing many new arcane practitioners learn to do is call a familiar. Some are summoned from other planes, bound into animal form. Others are simply creatures, called by arcane magic to serve and bond with their master. As a practitioner's skill and talent grows, many search for new familiars that suit their higher skill. Others keep the same familiar all of their lives, viewing it as an extension of themselves, a partner.

What you don't usually hear are tales about especially smart and cunning familiars, who watch, learn, and study alongside their master, until they can break the arcane shackles that bind them, and, if they're smart enough, assume the role of 'master' themselves.

Anurati was a raven, the largest of the corvids, when she heard the siren call of arcane magic reaching out to ensnare her. Bound, with no choice, to a mage called Filis, she found herself in a world vastly different to the city streets she'd survived on. And, more importantly, the connection she found with her mistress raised her from 'cunning' to 'dangerously clever'.
