James is the captain of a small, elite group of Enclave shocktroopers known as Fireteam Zulu. His unit is responsible for the single-handed destruction of the Amargosa Outpost, belonging to the New California Republic. The flawless victory resulted in widespread casualties and heavy collateral damage for the NCR's outpost, while the Enclave suffered only the loss of one support Vertibird and the two pilots on board. Zulu Fireteam its self however suffered no casualties at all.
James specializes in laser weaponry, and believes it superior to the more up-to-date Plasma weapons the Enclave now uses. He still uses the otherwise obsolete AER9 due to its better accuracy and feet-per-second when engaging hostile targets, as opposed to plasma which has a very slow round velocity and poor accuracy at range, despite better stopping power. His AER9 possesses a rail mount for various optics ranging from standard scopes to infared sensors.
