Once a proud prodigy under Emperor Frieza himself, Glaze was, if only briefly, one of Frieza's top fighters in his clan. Yet Glaze and his fall from grace was nonetheless both sudden and disastrous for the young Frost Demon's career. Although considerably younger than Frieza, his potential rivaled that of the emperor's personal body guards, and poised him to eventually rule as a Lord of his own domain, loyal to Frieza. However, his future as a galactic warlord was cut short after a disagreement with Frieza's ruling style turned volatile. Although Frieza's troops were fervently loyal, civilian populations were more commonly either enslaved or outright wiped out. Glaze saw this as counter-productive, and made the mistake of criticizing his leader over these tactics. Although it was not the criticism its self that got Glaze exiled--but rather, the manner in which he argued it. Frieza was surprisingly open to the critique, but when Glaze did not accept Frieza's retort, it erupted into a full-blown argument, after which Glaze was stripped of his rank for his outrageous disrespect toward Lord Frieza. Now lower on the hierarchy than even most Saiyans, Glaze struggled to reclaim his honor and his title. For a time, he remained loyal to Frieza, wondering if perhaps Frieza may have been right all along.
Glaze had argued that sooner or later Frieza's brutal tactics would cause an enemy to become stronger than either of them, who could rise up against them like the Saiyan known as Bardock did. Glaze protested that, instead of being known as a brutal tyrant, Frieza make an effort to befriend his populace and win their hearts as he had won the hearts of his soldiers. Personal strength wasn't everything, he said. He pointed to the Tuffles and their vastly superior technology, and how it made up for their lack of individual strength. Frieza's counter-argument was any such dissidents would be long dead far before they were of any significant threat, even citing his confrontation with Bardock. Frieza also pointed to the Tuffles, reminding Glaze how they were driven to extinction at the hands of the Saiyans, who were still considerably weaker than any of the Frost Demons in known existence. Like it or not, Frieza's argument defeated every point that Glaze could bring to the table, and yet Glaze stubbornly held on to his opinions. Surely he was right.
It was at a dinner party which Glaze had been invited to by Lord Frieza in which the course of his fate would change forever. Naturally with figures such as Frieza, Cooler, King Cold, and lesser rulers from around the galaxy, the topic of politics is one that would surely arise. Cooler was one who showed some sympathy with Glaze's position, but did not fully support it. The Saiyans in particular, in Cooler's opinion, were the very threat that Glaze warned of, but that is where the similarities end, as Cooler also still supported Frieza's scorched-world policies of handling such matters. Cooler's grievance was simply that Frieza could not recognize the threat and eliminate it soon enough. Discussing this with Cooler, Glaze on the other hand suggested that if the Saiyans were such a potential threat, why treat them like low-class warriors? Why not exploit their potential? Uplift their race, see to it that when they reach their pinnacle, even if they surpass Frieza, that they still submit to Frieza merely out of respect. That is when the argument took a turn for the worst.
Frieza, having overheard their conversation, would interject; "These dirty monkeys would only be a waste of time and resources... Glaze, you're an ambitious young boy. You're willing to take risks. That's why I like you... But come now," Frieza said with a gentle laugh, sipping a glass of wine, "We've been over this! Dozens of times! They were weak! There's barely any of them even left! Even if they were strong enough to be useful, I speak from experience when I say they would have only gotten in the way..." He began to turn to walk away, returning to his father to enjoy the shellfish horderves.
Gotten in the way? What Frieza meant was the race would have become arrogant. They would have, as they did, risen up and become a nuisance that, while no real threat, was nonetheless a disruption and an inconvenience to the ruling party's control and the stability of the empire. Glaze misinterpreted this as Frieza subconsciously giving away his greatest fear; of losing his power. So he called Frieza out on it. "You cut down the weak? Kill them before they can get strong? ... So you're a coward, then?" Not the best of responses.
The party went silent. Frieza's smile disappeared. He turned back around to face Glaze. "No," Frieza began to respond, "Rather; I have an understanding of upper management that you sorely lack..." Frieza pointed at his chest, but then his smile returned, yet his voice had a different tone than before. Almost threatening. Certainly mocking. "Allow me to humor you. Let us pretend, for a moment, the Saiyans were indeed a threat to my rule... First off, I would have taken them more seriously. Second, if they were so strong, they would have been able to at least stall my exterminating them. Third... I would exceed their power sooner than their inbred monkey brains would realize they even had that power... and I would crush them like insects."
"And what if you didn't see it coming? What if it was unexpected?" Glaze retorted. "You're no god. You don't see everything."
"No, but listen to yourself! I have ruled for decades, and you honestly believe I would not have some sense of foresight? I would see the competition, surpass it, then crush it... as I have many times before..."
"You dodged my question."
"It is one that cannot be answered! The scenario you imply is ridiculous at best... Insulting at worst." Frieza, now visibly flustered by the heated exchanged, turned again to attempt to leave him.
Yet Glaze would not let the debate die. Still much too arrogant for his own good, and perceiving some weakness in his ruler, Glaze made the error of challenging him; "And what if I threatened your rule?"
Now it had escalated from a mere annoyance and disagreement, to something Frieza was forced to give a more direct response to. Even Cooler could not believe the audacity of Glaze to make such a suggestion. Frieza turned back again to find Glaze grinning cockishly at him. Frieza was not amused. He set down his wine. "Fine then. Come with me. We'll settle this outside like gentlemen... and you will learn some respect..."
The ensuing battle was brief and brutal. Glaze did not hold back. He came at his Lord with everything he had, as the rest of Frieza's family and allied rulers spectated from the balcony of the palace the party was held at. The two mighty warriors clashed against the backdrop of a glittering night sky, illuminating the world below with flashes of crimson and blue... but only until Frieza grew bored with these theatrics. Without warning, Frieza smashed Glaze across the jaw and sent him careening into a nearby waterfall, destroying most of the cliff-side on impact. In only a single blow, the fight was over. Glaze was barely conscious. Frieza lifted him out of the rubble and held him by his neck with one hand, while his fingertip charged an attack on the other. "So... have I made my point?" Frieza asked Glaze, who could barely speak. Frieza went on to state; "I could kill you now. Under any other circumstance, I would. You insult me in front of my subjects, berate my policies, and dare to challenge me in combat? ... But I want to make a point. Remember what I said? That if I saw such danger, I would surpass it, then kill it? ... Even you are not a threat... That is why I let you live." Frieza dropped Glaze to the ground. The beam of energy on his fingertip faded. "However, that does not mean your transgression will not go unpunished..."
Though spared Frieza's full wrath, Glaze was disgraced. The soldiers given under his command now refused to obey. His short-lived rule buckled. Inevitably, Frieza's actions forced Glaze to resign and stand down. He had lost all respect. Eventually, Glaze would disappear among the stars, alone and broken. Left to meditate on his errors, Glaze was forced to admit, if only to himself, that Frieza's position was sound... at least, until Frieza met a particular Saiyan warrior raised on Earth. You would think that Glaze would decide himself vindicated? That he was right all along? In his time away, he had indeed learned some respect, and was in fact quite distraught over the death of his former mentor. While Frieza may have been wrong about the Saiyans, Glaze did not dare assume he was completely right. What if the Saiyans still had a race to rally behind? Though recognized as a tyrant, Frieza did bring an amount of order to the galaxy--order which was lost after his demise, leaving a power vacuum that sent the realm into chaos and war. Glaze was not the Lord who could fill that void. Though an accomplished warrior, he was still only a fraction of Frieza's power, even in comparison to Frieza's first form alone--and yet Frieza was dead. Who else might be capable of surpassing him? Would they be willing to listen to reason? Perhaps that was Frieza's point all along; that the Saiyans were not capable of reason, and only wanted power for their own selfish desires. How would history be different if the Saiyan race seized control of the galaxy? Perhaps other sentient species wouldn't be allowed to exist at all. At least under Frieza, anyone who could be useful was allowed to live and serve, and even went rewarded. Under Saiyan rule however, the Saiyans would only serve their own kind and nothing more. Though Frieza may have been selfish in his own right, Frieza was a benign dictator who brought order, prosperity, and even peace to his realm by means of an iron fist. To Lord Glaze, Frieza was the lesser of two evils. He knew that now.
Yet Glaze's destiny was set to alter once again. In exile, Glaze made his living as a bounty hunter, killing for profit under contract by various warlords. He took this as a learning opportunity... but one day, in the middle of training for his next battle, a flash of white light enveloped him. Next thing he knew, he was standing before a mighty dragon and a young human male with gray hair, dressed in a trench coat with a sword on his back. Trunks, whose name Glaze would come to learn, had summoned him there by means of a wish-granting dragon named Shenron. Trunks requested that Glaze join an organization known as the Time Patrol. Figuring it was no different than any contract he got before, he accepted the offer. Little did he know what lay ahead...
As Glaze would come to learn, the very nature of what it means to be a Time Patroller means that he is not the only one of his kind, and far from the most powerful, but now, given a chance to train with warriors across millions of timelines, Glaze was granted an opportunity like no other. He could afford to make mistakes that would otherwise be deadly. He could learn from them. Following in the footsteps of Time Patrollers before him, he'd undergo missions assigned to him by Trunks to undo damage to various timelines and dive into alternate realities. One set of missions would bring him to Namek, during Frieza's invasion. Now the ultimate test was at hand. Could he beat his mentor?
A thousand times no. Time and time again, Frieza crushed and killed him. If not for the extra chances and 'do-overs' being a time patroller grants him, it would have been over on the first encounter, but eventually, if you fail a thousand times, you're bound to succeed on the thousand-and-first... Finally, Glaze was able to defeat Frieza, or at least beat him back long enough to allow Goku to resolve the timeline as it was meant to be. Yet, this was not the last, nor even the most difficult challenge Glaze was forced to cope with. He'd go on to defeat the likes of Cell, Majin Buu, and even contend with Demigra and Lord Beerus (although Glaze suspects at least Beerus goes easy on him).
As powerful as Glaze has become though, he has learned that just because he's powerful in one timeline does not mean he is strong in another. The scale by which power is measured may vary from universe to universe. Just because in one timeline he was able to defeat Frieza does not mean he has the strength to do so in another. A friend of his, a female Majin calling herself 'Rix' for instance, effortlessly crushes him in hand-to-hand combat when they attempt to spar. So far the Majin maintains an unbroken winning streak over Glaze. It seems like every time they fight, he comes closer and closer to victory, only to watch her suddenly become vastly stronger than him. Her power level always remained close to his, and yet he was forced to play a constant and discouraging game of catch-up. It got him thinking; how can he out-do Rix? Where does Glaze succeed where Rix fails? Sent on similar missions, there were at least a handful of tasks that took Rix hundreds of attempts, while it took Glaze only a few.
Today, he spends much of his time in Toki Toki City, allowed to train with the best warriors that history has to offer. He's even been able to continue training with Frieza, and ask forgiveness for his past arrogance. Say what you will about Frieza, but Glaze is still respectful of the tyrant. Tyrant though he may be, there is a reason his soldiers are willing to die for him. Frieza is a charismatic leader who inspires his men to reach their potential. He does not take failure lightly, but neither does he take success lightly. He compliments, encourages, and even celebrates his successful subjects. As a result, Glaze still uses many of Frieza's techniques, and even unconsciously mimics Frieza's poses. This list includes of variations of the Death Ball, Finger Beam, Tsuibi Kienzan, Eye Laser, Kiai, telekinesis, Death Wave, and Nova Strike. Although he favors techniques used by Frieza, he has learned other useful abilities, such as sensing Ki, Galick Gun, and even the famous Kamehameha, all taught by his female Majin friend. He also has some technology to aid him, such as a suit of augmented bio-armor which enhances his Ki, and a purple scouter which is still useful despite his ability to sense Ki himself. After all, Scouters don't get bored with looking for targets.
Strength is a varying trait, as Glaze would learn. Power levels are insignificant. It is not a game of who has the strongest power level, but who can counter who. Glaze's combat style is countered by Rix, whose own combat style has also been countered by a Saiyan named Mayze. Mere chance alone has the potential to tip the tides of a battle to favor even the weakest of foes. In the end, growing stronger became irrelevant. Although Glaze continues to train, he does so with the knowledge that there is an alternative. As he said to Frieza so long ago; "Sooner or later, someone will surpass you." So instead, he asks himself, "What legacy will you leave behind? ... What will they say when you are gone? What side of history will you be on?" Glaze decided he'd rather be remembered as a hero than a tyrant.
I won't include awful powergaming or godmodding fights here. If someone's battle is listed here, assume the battle followed good roleplaying etiquette regardless of if I won or lost. Shit-RP will be recognized as non-canon. Luckily this hasn't been a problem yet. If you think I'm doing something powergamey against you, call me out on it so I can try to improve. Combat-oriented characters are hard to do well and this is my first and only combat-oriented character.
