Frowning, the hero faces his current enemy, a Medusa. Swiftly... he draws up the status menu, selects the Monsterpedia, and quickly reads over the biography, abilities, weaknesses and strengths of the species. Now with the knowledge he needs to best his foe, he readies his weapon, and charges!

But hang on... where do these entries even come from?

A small group of researchers, that's what. They roam the world, discovering, speaking to, and investigating the various abilities and techniques various monsters can use, and document them for use by adventurers. The work, understandably, is dangerous, the diets of many creatures turning out to be a bit more human-centered than many would hope. However, reformation is available, and thus the researchers can continue throwing themselves at whatever new species crops up, all in the name of discovery!
