Backstory
Across the world, the primary fact of life is that the common folk cannot afford the time to study, cannot grasp much of the written word, and are largely ignorant. Still, when rising above the unwashed masses, Dioane thanks the gods for her luck, to be born into a well off family. Not a rich or a noble family, just a well off one, with an elder brother to carry on the family business. Of course, in her breaks from the library, she learned the other family trade, though her family made sure to keep it oral only until she reached a more proper size. The fact that her father ran several whorehouses, and her mother was a madam, and she was expected to be the family accountant?
Well, it did explain the reason she was sent to school after all. Still, she soon learned more then they may have wished, branched from strictly mundane subjects useful to the business enterprise, to the arts of magic, of which she demonstrated an extremely powerful gift. Bolstered in part by rigorous negotiations, which left her professors spent and satisfied, she grew in knowledge, until she had enough to support herself as a sage and consultant.
Granted, she may not have the best relationship with her family at the moment, and while she may miss the family discount, she has managed to use a part of what they taught to enhance her own powers.
